Bang(or) goes reason…

Filed under: Uncategorized — madaxeman @ 7:45 am

So, the local police and the council have decided to unilaterally ban all persons under 16 years of age from Bangor city centre after 9pm at night. Wonderful. Nice work boys.

Of course, some might speculate as to whether it is truly reasonable to criminalise people merely on the basis of the presence at a particular location and their age. They might question the message this sends out to those children who currently respect the law, how this will affect their perception of the police…

I myself used to cycle through a city centre when I was 14 after 9pm, because I did a lot of work for St. John Ambulance, not because I was turning over old grannies…)

Young people are not all a menace to society, and policies like this risk alienating the very people we should as a society be trying to nurture. It is, in short, bloody minded madness.

After all, if you really want to eliminate crime from the streets of Bangor, it’s actually quite a simple task – you just bring the army in and curfew EVERYONE from the streets. Of course, those in authority have clearly decided, quite rightly, that this would represent an intolerable imposition on the civil liberties of the town’s residents. It’s depressing that they don’t recognise that young people are entitled to those same civil liberties.

Whoever took the decision to implement this needs to reconsider their position, and I do not mean merely on the policy.

  1. Exactly. Whatever the answer to Bangor’s problems are, it cannot be this measure.

    • I just see this as picking on a group of people who can’t defend themselves. If particular groups of young people CAUSE A PROBLEM, then they should be held accountable before the law just like anyone else. But to simply decide to curfew based solely on age is intolerable.

  2. Amazing: 1 sentence longer than 1 word, and I get the grammar wrong. Delete “are”; insert “is”!
