Riots and Protest – learn to spot the difference…

Filed under: Uncategorized — madaxeman @ 11:53 am

As we all know, several cities in England have had riots in the past few days, and once again we have the media getting a little confused with an entirely peaceful protest, calling for information surrounding the death of a man shot to death (rightly or wrongly) by the police, and a riot.

Let’s be clear – Mark Duggan’s family do not condone the riots – they’ve openly declared that. As for what lies beneath the riots themselves, I suspect each person involved does so for their own reasons – none of which have merit.

Protest is a noble thing, and whilst it usually seeks to make an impact and a bit  of noise, proper protest does not involve the suspension of common values or a lack of respect for those around you. Make a noise, have some fun, but once you find yourselves walking out of Dixons with a free TV under your arm, something has gone horribly wrong – you’ve crossed the line… Don’t pretend that you didn’t know what you were doing as you did it either!

The people who go out thieving and looting are not protestors – they are thieves – and I’ve no problem with their being banged up and treated as such.

The riots must stop – they achieve nothing. However, it’s also important that we don’t lose sight of the protest – because if (and I sincerely mean IF) it turns out that the round of ammunition found in the police officer’s radio was actually police issue ammunition, then there are very serious questions to be addressed – especially if we have any suggestion of dishonesty on the part of the police again.

Of the same import however is a cold hard fact – if it is eventually proven that Duggans did threaten officers with a firearm, and especially if he actually fired, then the police owe no apologies whatsoever for a decision to respond with deadly force.

The truth will out, and I look forward to it.

  1. After that first night, I think we’re basically just seeing the phenomenon of the Flash Mob evolve into the more sinister Flash Rob.
